Fireweed (Chamaenerion angustifolium) gets its name from its ability to colonize areas rapidly after a fire. A tall showy wildflower that grows in every single province and territory in Canada. It thrives in open meadows, along streams, roadsides, and forest edges. In some places, this species is so abundant that it can carpet entire meadows with brilliant pink flowers. Fireweed spreads via rhizomes and likes disturbance, be cautious with planting this in small garden situations as it can take over.
