Rutabagas are a reliable staple of fall and winter root vegetables. The Helenor variety stands out as a tried-and-true choice. Its large, round roots feature attractive purple shoulders where exposed to sunlight and can stay in the ground until you're ready to harvest.
While they can be planted early, they are most commonly grown for fall and winter harvests. For this purpose, sow seeds directly between May and late June. Rutabagas can endure moderate frosts, which enhance their sweetness once frost sets in. They store exceptionally well in a cool, well-ventilated space.
Growing Instructions:
Germinates best at 18-21°C in consistently moist soil. Seeds should sprout in 7-15 days.
Plant Spacing : thin to 6-8" apart. Row Spacing: 24-30" apart.
Direct Seed: Direct sow rutabaga seeds 1/4-1/2" deep late-May to Mid-June. Transplant: start indoors 4-6 weeks before you want to plant. Sow 2-3 seeds at 1/2 inch depth and thin to keep the strongest seedling.
