Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) is a well-known prairie staple that plays an extremely important role in native prairie ecosystems. This grass actively grows during the summer when soil temperatures are warm. This is a big grass variety, often growing over six feet tall in most situations.

It can be used as a landscape accent, but it can be aggressive and is not recommended for small spaces.  Its beautiful fall colours display in the range of gold and pink. Big Bluestem is the host-plant to many insects, including Northern Pearly-eye, Common-Wood Nymph, Ottoe Skipper, Cobweb Skipper, Dusted Skipper, Delaware Skipper, Arogos Skipper, and Indian Skipper, and provides habitat for many other insects, small mammals, and birds.

For larger stands, sow at a density of 5 KG/acre.

Growing Instructions

No pre-treatment required. Sow seed at 1/4 inch depth. Do not let seedling dry out while it is establishing.
