This grass actively grows during the summer when soil temperatures are warm.

It can be used as a landscape accent, but it can be aggressive and is not recommended for small spaces. Its beautiful fall colours display in the range of gold and pink. Big Bluestem is the host-plant to many insects, including Northern Pearly-eye, Common-Wood Nymph, Ottoe Skipper, Cobweb Skipper, Dusted Skipper, Delaware Skipper, Arogos Skipper, and Indian Skipper, and provides habitat for many other insects, small mammals, and birds.

For larger stands, sow at a density of 5 KG/acre.
