Canada Wild Rye (Elymus canadensis) is a cool-season grass with wispy nodding seed heads and a warm green colour that actively grows during the spring and fall when soil temperatures are cool. This is a great native cover crop as it is fast growing and will stabilize a site quickly. Note that the blades can have sharp edges once mature, so make sure to place it strategically in the garden should you have pets or children who play in the yard.
For larger projects:
- Apply Canada wild rye at a rate of 5 KG/ acre if incorporated into a wildflower and grass mixture.
- If sowing on its own, or as a nurse crop, apply at a rate of 10-30 KG/ acre. Apply seed at the lower range if drill seeding, and at the higher range if broadcasting or hydroseeding.
