Also known as Guerande, it was introduced from France in 1884 by W. Atlee Burpee as well as James J. H. Gregory. Each heart-shaped carrot can weigh up to one pound and be 5 or 6 inches long and 3 to 4 inches across. Excellent quality, stores well. Very uniform true-to-type strain. This type is a good choice for gardens with shallow or heavy soils, since it doesn’t need to grow as deeply as others.

Growing Instructions

You can sow carrot seeds as soon as the soil in your garden can be worked in the spring (about 3-4 weeks before the last frost). Seeds need consistent moisture until they emerge (considering covering with a wooden board/ burlap/ row cover until germination. Germination on carrot seed is slow and uneven. Sow the seeds less than an inch apart, 1/4" depth and thin them to 2-4 inches after they grow to a few inches. Rows 6-8" apart. Keeping soil moist throughout the germination period is important to success. Misting the planted area daily and covering is recommended.
